Heroes

I watched the first two episodes of Heroes the night before last and the remaining episodes last night. While the first episode was so-so, the subsequent ones are really good in that “I’m surprised mainstream really likes this show” kind of way. The “heroes” are thoroughly human, trying to come to grasp with their abilities while still suffering from their own faults and generally what makes them largely human.

Particularly good sub-plots are:

  • The cheerleader who found that she’s effectively immortal. She's placed in both horrific and comically dark situations in the first few episodes. The show loosely aludes that she can be killed by the overly employed “Save the cheerleader - save the world“ axiom. Or perhaps by “Save“ they mean “from the darkside“ as it were?
  • The Japanese that can bend space and time (teleport) who’s just a nobody that always wanted to be special…innocently stumbling into what will be the main plot, by teleporting himself 5 weeks into the future.
  • A girl whose mirror (literally in the mirror) image appears to be a psychotic killer.

There are quite a few other main characters in the mix, and the writing is pretty decent. Suresh's character is overly dramatic and lays on chaotic displays of pessimism about his father too quickly followng the first two episodes in which he feels the need to follow in his fathers footsteps. It's not as convincing but is just a chink in the armor that will hopefully be mended as the show matures.

I definitely recommend checking it out.
