I've been diabetic for a long time now. Yesterday I finally took the plunge and got a pump. I've been wearing it for nearly a day now. I have to say it's awfully convenient although somewhat odd getting used to it. There are certain situations where I'm just not sure what to do with the pump. I won't go into those here.
As for the control it gives, it's too hard to tell. I can say this much though. The problem of long time insulin absorption appears to be as clear as night and day. My blood sugars haven't been above 150 in 24 hours, which is pretty cool if you ask me. I'm pretty decent as the math required to calculate insulin to carb ratios and corrections so I usually know what the pump is going to suggest. Thing is, even though I come up with the same values, when I was taking shots it didn't work so well. I think this had a lot to do with the long acting insulin. Some days it worked fine, other days it didn't. Another cool thing is this can do fractions of units, where that's all but impossible with a syringe.
Moving forward I've got to figure out my correct basal rate. I used to be on 30 units of Lantus but even at 1u/h Novolog (24 units per day) I tend to be hitting more lows in a single day than I hit in a single week. That might account for my continued overall lower sugars but time will tell.
